Why Does My Cat Follow Me? Attention, Routine, and Context
Your cat may follow you for attention, company, curiosity about what you are doing, food anticipation, or a familiar routine. Cats Protection and the Ontario SPCA describe these as possibilities. Following alone does not prove affection or diagnose separation anxiety.

Notice what is happening at the time
A familiar household routine can help explain the timing: your cat may appear when you head toward the kitchen or around its usual mealtime. Cats Protection lists food anticipation and learned routine as possibilities.
Attention, play, company, and curiosity about what you are doing are other possibilities described by Cats Protection and Ontario SPCA. Notice whether your cat joins a shared activity or simply stays nearby. If your cat is already interested, a short play session can be part of the interaction.
Look at the whole scene
Notice where the following happens, what is going on nearby, and your cat’s posture. PDSA’s body-language guidance recommends considering the surroundings and more than one signal, because the same posture can appear in different contexts. Taken together, those observations describe the situation more clearly.
Compare it with your cat’s usual pattern
A familiar routine is different from a sudden increase in following. Notice when it happens and whether your cat seems newly clingy or distressed. If the behavior has changed suddenly, Cats Protection and Ontario SPCA advise discussing it with a veterinarian.
